Because most air pollution is preventable, Spare the Air is focused on educating the public and promoting changes in behavior that will help prevent poor air quality.

The program reaches out to several audiences: • AirAlert is an email service that informs the public the day before a Spare the Air day is predicted to occur. It encourages Bay Area residents to modify their behavior to prevent, or at least reduce, the anticipated bad air and gives advance notice to people with respiratory sensitivities, such as asthma or emphysema.
