Hierarki DPN menyenaraikan bandar-bandar berdasarkan 3 sumber rujukan utama iaitu : i.Rancangan Fizikal Negara (RFN) ii.Hierarki Bandar Tahun 2020, Draf Rancangan Struktur Negeri disemua negeri kecuali Perlis (Rancangan Struktur (Pengubahan) Kangar 1998-2020) iii.Laporan Kiraan Permulaan Bandar dan Luar Bandar, Banci Penduduk dan Perumahan Tahun 2000./ /The NUP hierarchy lists towns on the basis of 3 main reference sources : i.National Physical Plan ii.Urban Hierarchy 2020, Draft State Structure Plan at all states except Perlis (Kangar Structure Plan (Amendment) 1998-2020) iii.Report on the Calculation of Urban and Rural Towns, Population and Housing Census 2000.
