The source of dietary fiber in the RTDs is a compound called fructooligosaccharides, or FOS. So then, what are fructooligosaccharides? Fructooligosaccharides are a type of fiber that many of us have been eating for years. It’s present in foods such as garlic, honey, rye, brown sugar, bananas, onions, barley and tomatoes. Just like other fibers, the body cannot breakdown FOS and use them for energy. It is therefore passed to the large intestine and consumed by beneficial bacteria, called bifido bacteria. Bifido bacteria are good bacteria in our body that help us fight disease. They are important in the maintenance of a healthy GI (gastrointestinal) tract, protect us from a range of toxins, and are necessary for optimal nutrient absorption. Studies with FOS have shown advantages with lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels, lowering blood sugar, decreasing blood pressure and raising HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol in our bodies).
