Advice on expiry of eye drops was originally based on the advice of a Working Party convened by the Department of Health and Social Security in 1972. The BNF recognised that these recommendations pre-dated the use of plastic dropper bottles and improvements to preservative systems. However, it is our understanding that since the Department of Health has not rescinded these recommendations, they still remain in force. Some changes (based on expert advice) have been made to reflect current practice.
