What is the SOLAS convention?
This international convention concerning the safety of vessels was first adopted in 1914, in response to the Titanic disaster. The December 2002 amendments were adopted by the IMO (the International Maritime Organization), the intergovernmental organization providing maritime safety. These amendments created a new chapter containing the mandatory requirement for all the ports to develop a port facility security plan for international vessels by July 1, 2004.
