What is the soil composition at the new parking garage next to the Kansas Union?
Warren Corman, university architect, said the soil at the parking garage construction site is similar to other areas of campus. A layer of black topsoil covers yellow and brown clays, and beneath that is a deposit of gray shale. “We call it shattered shale,” Corman said. “It’s common on top of the Hill.” Construction workers will drill footings for the garage down to a rock base in about a week, he said.
