What is the Social Exclusion Unit?
The Prime Minister set up the Social Exclusion Unit in 1997. Since then the Unit has led innovative thinking in addressing some of society’s most difficult problems. Initially part of the Cabinet Office, the Unit moved to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) in May 2002 and now works closely with other parts of the Office such as the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit and the Homelessness and Housing Support Directorate to tackle deprivation. Together, we are working to create prosperous, inclusive and sustainable communities for the 21 st century – places where people want to live that promote opportunity and a better quality of life for all.
