The University Management System (UMS) will convert its Student Information System (SIS) database later this term and assign new Student identification numbers (SIDs) to all students who currently use their Social Security Number (SSN) as their on-campus ID. The new Student IDs are system-generated and unique, and students will be asked to use their Student IDs as their primary Student identifier on campus. Numerous databases and resources “downstream” of SIS will stop using the old Student identification number and Social Security Number (SSN) completely and begin using the new Student ID (SID). Other systems that don’t require use of the SSN—but may be using it due to convenience or tradition—are encouraged to eliminate its use whenever possible, taking advantage of the conversion, increased attention to security, and alternative practices.
