What Is The Smallest Living Bird On The Planet?
Known for their ability to hover in mid-air, the hummingbird is the smallest bird on the planet. There are several hummingbird species, between three hundred and twenty-five and three hundred and fourty, and, of this species, the Bee Hummingbird, weighing, approximately, 1.8 grams, is the smallest bird in the world. The Giant Hummingbird is the largest hummingbird and has been known to weigh as much as twenty-four grams. As well as having the ability to hover, the hummingbird is also able to fly backwards and vertically. Found only in the Americas and the Caribbean, the majority of the species prefer the tropical regions of Central and South America. Trinidad and Tobago was once, and sometimes still is, referred to as the ‘land of the hummingbird’ due to the fact that these tiny birds were such a common sight there. When hovering, these birds produce a humming sound and, thus, were given the name ‘Hummingbirds’.
