What is the smallest city in Australia?
It’s a bit like asking who is the world’s tallest midget. A city is defined by its size, so the smallest will just be whichever city meets the criteria most narrowly. And to determine that, you need a definition. If we use the definition suggested by the answerer above (a population over 25 000) then I think Australia’s smallest city is probably Albany, WA. I can’t actually an official definition specifying population size, but the Australian Bureau of Statistics defines a city as a kind of local government area. Now Albany might have a population just over 25 000, but the City of Albany (the LGA) has a population of over 30 000. In fact, after an exhaustive search of all the LGAs that are called cities, I can say that the smallest city in Australia is the City of Perth. Perth has about 1.5 million people, but the City of Perth only has a little over 13 000. It also might be the smallest by area, at 12.7km² .
