What is the Slope Rating?
It is the courses “difficulty rating”. Think of it this way… If two golfers of very different abilities on average post scores of 85 strokes, but golfer “A” posts this average while playing on a very easy course while golfer “B” posts this average while playing on a very difficult course, who would win if they played together on the same course? – golfer “B”, right. Slope rating would level set these two golfers if they were to compete in a handicap competition. The slope rating for a course of average difficulty is 113. As this number increases above 113, the harder it becomes for a golfer to post a score equal to his or her handicap index plus the course rating and thus a golfer’s course handicap increases as slope increases above 113. A scratch golfer on average will post a score equal to the course rating regardless of the slope. A bogey golfer (18 Handicap) on average will post a score equal to the course rating + 18 when the slope rating is 113. As the slope increases above 113
