WHAT IS THE SINGLE STATE REGISTRATION SYSTEM (SSRS)?
Motor carriers authorized to engage in interstate commerce (for hire transportation of passengers or property) as a common or contract carrier by the former Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) and current Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) are required to register their interstate operating authority with a participating state. A carrier that maintains its principle place of business outside of a participating state must select the state in which it will operate the largest number of vehicles during the next registration calendar year. Commercial vehicles not displaying a current registration plate, plate stickers and cab card, a valid trip permit or temporary vehicle registration are in violation, and the registrant is subject to penalties and fines in all jurisdictions in which the vehicle travels.
