GREAT question – great scene. The scene shows the distance between them. Elizabeth knows about John’s affair. John is trying very hard to make it up to her and be a better husband, but Elizabeth just cannot let it go. The scene shows that she doesnt blame him – she blames herself. She says it takes a cold wife to promote adultry. The scene also leads in to the fact that Elizabeth has been accused in court as a witch when Mary Proctor enters the house. It ends with Elizabeth being taken away and Abagail secretly gloating.
