What is the significance of the name Orfeo Society?
Orpheus was called “the father of songs.” The Greeks of the Classical age venerated the legendary figure of Orpheus as chief among poets and musicians. It was said that with his music and singing he could charm birds, fish and wild beasts, coax the trees and rocks into dance, and even divert the course of rivers. Orpheus is the inspiration for much of the literature, poetry and drama of ancient Greece and Rome as well as much dramatic Western classical music. L’Orfeo (L’Orfeo, favola in musica) by Claudio Monteverdi is one of the earliest works recognized as an opera.
