What is the significance of the fibonacci sequence?
It’s fundamentally a number-theory problem which turns out to spawn other interesting problems. It’s also a good context for practicing many mathematical techniques: I’ve done a number of proofs in this section involving the sequence, a lot of algebra, and mathematical induction. Its historic significance for mathematics is a consequence. It has kept turning up interesting problems, and useful teaching exercises, for many years. There are other, related sequences, but the Fibonacci sequence is more deeply embedded in mathematical traditions. It also turns out to relate in interesting ways to branches of mathematics outside of number theory, and even to ratios that appear in nature.
