What is the significance of the coloured belts?
Karate coloured belts were first copied by Sensei Gichin Funakoshi from a similar mechanism in Judo. A typical urban myth is that your belt gets darker the hard you work and hence the progression from white to black. There is no evidence this was ever the case. Shukokai Karate adopts a 10 grade (known as Kyu) belt system before reaching black belt.
