What is the significance of the black and white, cartoon effect, sepia, etc.?
The cartoon effect created by Courtney, which we refer to as the “graphic novel effect,” immediately informs the viewer that the narrative rules are different in LOOP. LOOP is also related to the way I dream. At times, I dream lucidly. Sometimes I dream in black and white and in the dream I notice it, but then color appears. The sepia tones were not indicative of just a memory, but a distant reality. There were flashes of color in that scene that brought the strongest aspects of that distant reality front and center. It is really at the point where Joe begins to finally put everything together, yet the actual answers he had been seeking are “read only” and can’t really be saved. They are more distant than ever. How about the helicopters? Were they 3D/CG or shots of a remote control helicopter composited? The helicopters were modeled by Courtney and animated by her. What is really amazing is that all of the field scene was shot over two days with a crew of two, Lisa and I, and my son Al
