What is the Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM) program?
The Significance Analysis of Microarray (SAM) program is an Excel add-in for: • Identifying genes with significantly differing expression levels between sets of samples, as long as an a-priori hypothesis is present that some genes will have significantly different mean expression levels between different sets of samples. • Estimating the number of microarray chips required to reach a pre-defined level of significance of difference between the mean of scores from two different conditions, given a set of genes for which preliminary expression data is available [screenshot]. The algorithm behind SAM is a robust permutation-based method that relies on variance information present in measurements obtained from all probes on a microarray.
