What is the service life of a US manufactured plane and engine?
There is no stated service life for any US manufactured plane or engine. Airframes and engines are serviced by certified mechanics who determine what work needs to be done to keep the aircraft airworth and safe. Lycoming and Continental engines have recommended overhaul times of between 1500 and 2400 hours depending on the engine model. Even these overhaul times, however, are recommended rather than mandatory. Generally speaking airframes with less than 4 thousand hours are considered low time. 5 to 8 thousand hours are mid time. 9 thousand hours and above are considered high time aircraft.
