What is the service intent of the Observation Bed / Service Period?
This level of care is intended for the care of the withdrawing patient when the clinician/physician is not sure if the presenting patient is in need of a Medically Managed Withdrawal bed or a Medically Supervised Withdrawal bed. Due to the fact that the patient potentially could be the most complicated (Medically Managed), the criteria is one of high level (complicated) withdrawal services. The medical staff should evaluate the patient at 24 hours and 48 hours for a clearer delineation of level of care and the patient can be transferred to that level (Medically Managed or Medically Supervised) at 24 or 48 hours. The observation period ends at 48 hours and a determination must be made.
