What is the security situation in Kenya/Nairobi/Kisumu/Ugunja?
As a traveler in Kenya, you need to be security-conscious at all times. Kenya is a very poor country, and foreigners are natural targets for crime. Particular care is required in Nairobi. You should always carry your valuables in a money belt, concealed underneath your clothing. You should avoid walking alone at night, particularly in certain areas. More detailed advice can be found in travellers’ guidebooks. Although it is safer than Nairobi, Kisumu also has its risks. The same precautions apply. To avoid the risks of night-time traveling, UCRC discourages volunteers from travelling between Kisumu and Ugunja by matatu mini-bus after dark. The risks are far less in Ugunja, especially out in the villages, although it is still not a good idea to walk around alone at night, especially if you have been drinking alcohol.
