The garden, itself, is the secret. What the garden represents is the secret. The fact that what is ugly and dead looking hides extraordinary beauty and life is a part of that secret hidden in the garden. A part of the secret is the fact that seeing the beauty – only in your mind’s eye at first – and lovingly nurturing that hidden life, instead of thinking and living only for yourself, brings out hidden beauty and life in yourself. There is the secret of what happened to the mother, what happened to the father because of it, and what happened to Colin because of both.
