What is the Scottish National Portrait Gallery?
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was opened in 1889 and is the first purpose-built national Portrait Gallery in the world. It was founded by the then editor of the Scotsman newspaper, John Ritchie Findlay, who also provided most of the funding for its construction. It is part of the family of National Galleries of Scotland and is home to a 30,000-strong Scottish national collection of portraits and the national photography collection.
