What is the Scottish Family Health Study?
The aim of the Scottish Family Health Study (GS:SFHS) is to build a resource that can be used by research scientists to learn more about the genes that influence our risk of getting common conditions like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and mental illness. These diseases are often passed down in families so GS:SFHS is recruiting family members to help work out the genetic and lifestyle factors that put people at risk of becoming ill. The project is aiming to follow the health of to 50,000 family members (e.g. brothers, sisters and parents) in Scotland. Information on environment and lifestyle will be collected from each participant, and this will be linked to medical records and results from tests on biological samples. The samples will be stored securely so that they can be used for biochemical and genetic analysis in the future.
