What is the role of the government backbench?
The government backbench represents the interests of state and electorate based constituents and supports executive government business including: • proposals for new or altered laws • proposals for policy and agenda reform • support for ministers during Question Time. Members of the government backbench strive to maintain the support of the Australian electorate. If the government loses a federal election, it is most likely that the opposition will become the new government.
