What is the role of the Catholic church?
The Catholic Church has owned it only since 1983. For the previous 600 years it has been in private possession with the Church sometimes acting as a custodian. It was kept in Italy and France for those years and they are both predominantly Catholic countries. The Orthodox Church kept it nearly a thousand years before that in Constantinople and Edessa.
