what is the role of religion in philosophical values and empirical science?
In my opinion religion and theology are one of the main streams of thought that contributed to the development of philosophy. In Europe, in the Middle Ages till quite late, the universities were religious institutions: Oxford dons were ordained, and couldn’t marry. Therefore most philosophical questions have been informed by religious thought. As examples, I’ll give John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, religious thought informs their books. An individual example is where John Locke says that as life is a gift from God this means suicide is wrong because it is spurning God’s gift. I know this isn’t a comprehensive answer and there will be people who differ, which is fine. I read political philosophy and don’t have such a large grasp, but I hope this answer gives you some food for thought.
