NBPGR is the nodal institution for exchange of plant genetic resources and has been empowered under Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order 2003 to handle quarantine processing of germplasm and transgenic planting material being imported for research purposes in the country by both public and private sectors. The NBPGR Regional Station at Hyderabad undertakes quarantine inspection and clearance of the germplasm meant for the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics, Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh and other institutes of South India.
