What is the Role of Education Welfare Service?
In Staffordshire the Education Welfare Service is responsible for the authority’s statutory duty to ensure that young people of compulsory school age are enrolled at a school and attend regularly if they are not being suitably educated ‘otherwise’. The Education Welfare Service will contact you and wherever possible seek an informal resolution to concerns. Education Welfare Officers will be aware of additional sources of support in your area, and are able to work more closely with you than our School Improvement Division Team. If this does not resolve concerns the authority will write a formal notice to you, giving you 15 days to satisfy it that your child is being suitably educated. If you do not respond or if your response is not satisfactory, the authority can serve a School Attendance Order on you requiring you to register your child at a named school.
