How do we differentiate content? • Teachers may wonder how they can differentiate content for different learners given the fact that content is generally prescribed by the Standard Course of Study. However, it is important to remember that while some content is prescribed, teachers can incorporate concepts from other disciplines as well as additional content of their own choosing over and above the standard content. • What can really help differentiate content is student interest. When students show an interest in a particular area of content knowledge, teachers do a disservice to those students if they tell them “we don’t have time for that.” Smart teachers can turn student interest in a particular content area to their advantage by discussing the content in class (within reasonable time limits) or allowing the student to construct an individual project to extend his or her own learning. • Another factor to consider is student readiness.
