If you are just starting out and are buying fish locally then don’t try to mess with your ph. Also don’t bother with test strips for anything – invest about £15-20 in a liquid test kit and remember the important things to test are Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte.

Basically your tank inhabitants are going to dictate what pH you should keep your aquarium at. Most goldfish and tropical fish require a neutral pH, anywhere from 7.4 – 7.6. Where as Cichlids prefire higher pH’s around 7.8 – 8.2.

You need to look up your fish species and see what their pH requirements are and go from there.. The thing is, a stable pH is ALWAYS better than one that is bouncing around. Using pH up or pH down and things in a bottle will not help you out. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a stable pH because if it isn’t your fish can get very stressed and/or die. Using strips are not recommended because they are not as accurate as a liquid test kit so I suggest to chuck out the strips and get an API test kit. The size of a fish tank has nothing to do with the pH levels by the way. Get back to us on the types of fish you have and also what your pH level is.
