What is the Richmond SPCA’s spay/neuter initiative?
The Richmond SPCA launched one of the most aggressive high-volume spay/neuter initiatives in the country in October 2004. We pledged to perform 9,000 surgeries annually for three years in order to decrease the homeless animal population in our community so that a maintenance level is achieved, whereby the number of available homes equals the number of orphaned pets. We also pledged to provide those surgeries for free to the pets of low-income families. We surpassed those goals and will continue and expand our spay/neuter efforts as part of our long range plan. Our clinic provides free surgeries to all pets of individuals on any form of public assistance or with a combined household income of less than $30,000, to pets of full-time college students, to feral cats and to purebred and strong pit bull mixes. We provide low-cost surgeries to pets whose owners do not meet these requirements. For more information, call our spay/neuter helpline at 804-521-1300 or click here.
