What is the required training for an oceanographer?
Individual development is encouraged via original research, secondments, collaborative work, self-managed learning and professional seminars. Further qualifications and training may be obtained at masters, PhD and post-doctoral level, in the UK and abroad. Research and academic organisations often provide internal training on skills such as writing and presenting papers, as well as scientific issues. It is also possible to arrange short study periods at an overseas marine institute or work on short projects overseas, but this may have to be at your own expense. Much training comes from listening to and observing other oceanographers, especially those from specific branches of the profession (e.g. chemical oceanography) and those from different scientific backgrounds, such as physicists and environmentalists.
