What is the relationship, if any, between the Shadow Conventions and the Nader and Buchanan candidacies?
Shadow Conventions 2000 includes prominent Democrats and Republicans as well as folks of other partisan and non-partisan persuasions. Certain elements of the Nader and Buchanan messages will find resonance in our proceedings. It’s not unlikely that some Republican and Democratic leaders may find the Shadow Conventions threatening and ascribe partisan electoral motives to our work. But the Shadow Conventions are not a stalking horse for any candidacy of any party. They constitute a sophisticated programmatic challenge to the two major party conventions because these are the conventions being presented to the public as the focal points of political activity in today’s America. We challenge both major parties to genuinely engage on our three linked, critical issue areas. We are engaged in the politics of ideas, not the politics of electioneering.
