The sustainable development approach is described in section 14(h) of the LGA as: ‘In performing its role, a local authority must act in accordance with the following principles: … (h) in taking a sustainable development approach, a local authority shall take into account- (i) the social, economic, and cultural well-being of people and communities; and (ii) the need to maintain and enhance the quality of the environment; and (iii)the reasonably foreseeable needs of future generations.’ This clause encourages local authorities to play a broad role in promoting the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of their communities. This principle allows a balanced approach to be undertaken on all decisions made by LAs.
