What is the relationship between Spelman Medical Foundation and Saint Lukes Northland Hospital?
The Spelman Medical Foundation originally served as the fund raising arm of the Spelman Memorial Hospital in Smithville. In the 1990s, after decades of operating as a successful rural hospital, Spelman Memorial Hospital joined with Saint Lukes Health Care System to offer services at Barry Road as well as Smithville. Eventually, the two institutions merged into the one entity with two campuses, now known as Saint Lukes Northland Hospital (SLNH). In 1994, the Spelman Medical Foundation elected to serve the new joint entity, but reserved its original name and an independent governing board. This independence is one of the foundations strengths, just as the affiliation with SLNH offers the foundation a great opportunity for making a difference for the community. Our office is located on the Barry Road campus of SLNH.
