They are hepatic portal vessels, which transport nutrients from the intestine to the liver where they can be processed/stored before the blood goes out into the systemic circulation. This portal circulation prevents excessive fluctuations in systemic blood glucose levels and is responsible for the first-pass effect that occures when drugs are ingested.
