What is the relationship between a Power of Attorney, a U.S. Customs Bond and the term Importer of Record?
Most companies that import goods to the U.S. on a regular basis have their own U.S. Customs bond. For a 3rd party, like a U.S. Customs broker, to use that bond on that company’s behalf, the company must issue a Power of Attorney to the broker granting that right. When the Customs broker obligates the U.S. Customs bond for entry purposes based on the authority grated by the Power of Attorney, they are designating the importing company as the Importer of Record to U.S. Customs.
