What is the relation between the R&TTE and various other Directives such as EMC, Maritime, motor vehicles and medical devices?
The R&TTE Directive directly relates to the EMC and LVD Directives as it incorporates the essential requirements foreseen by those Directive and allows a manufacturer to continue to use some of their conformity assessment procedures. In addition Harmonised Standards under those Directives also have that status under the R&TTE Directive. As regards the other Directives the relation differs. Annex I of the Directive for instance excludes equipment, which is covered by the maritime Directive from its scope. In contrast equipment covered by the motor vehicle and medical devices Directives are explicitly included in the scope of the R&TTE Directive (article 1.3 and 1.4). This implies that several Directives cover them at the same time. This may look problematic, but in fact isn’t. These Directives cover notably certain EMC and safety requirements in a manner that is more stringent then the R&TTE, EMC and LVD Directives. Equipment complying with them thus automatically comply with the R&TTE
