What is the regional profile of governance work for the British Council in China & Hong Kong?
Governance and civil society is a broad topic that has different connotations in countries and constitutions of different developmental stages. We work via our local offices in the China region (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Hong Kong) in the development of projects and exchanges that have local relevance to the specific geographic area. Because of the UK’s history in Hong Kong, the influence of the UK’s law and legislation has taken root in the policy-making system locally. Both governed by common law, the UK and Hong Kong share many similarities in their approach to law and legislation. Programmes on enhancement of access to justice and exchanges in legal education are key areas of work that we are involved in with local organisations and policy-makers. We strive to continue to identify areas of UK expertise that is beneficial to Hong Kong and vice versa, new initiatives are constantly being developed in response to Hong Kong’s social needs and trends.
