The REEP Writing Assessment (RWA) is a performance-based writing test used to measure writing gains for adult English language learners (ELLs) at Student Performance Level (SPL)2+/National Reporting System (NRS)1 Beginning ESL level+. The RWA was developed by staff at the Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP) in Arlington, Virginia. The RWA assessment consists of the REEP Writing Rubric and timed performance tasks. The Rubric articulates six performance levels across five specific dimensions of writing: Content & Vocabulary, Organization & Development, Structure, Mechanics, and Voice. The performance tasks, which require students to respond to a written prompt, are scored using the Rubric. The RWA can measure learner gains in writing, place students in appropriate instructional levels, diagnose learner needs, and evaluate program effectiveness.
