It is a REGISTRY level period of 30 days whereby the original registrant has the chance to get a domain name renewed. Please note this 30-day period happens after any registrar “on-hold” period. You can tell a name is in the grace period by the status field in the registry output e.g: Domain Name: DOMAIN.COM Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD Updated Date: 11-mar-2004 Creation Date: 13-feb-1999 Expiration Date: 13-feb-2004 Just add 30 days to the “Updated Date” to find out the last date the name can be renewed.

Redemption Grace Period was established by ICANN and the domain registries to provide a grace period when only the previous registrant of an expired domain could get it back. The Redemption Grace Period was created for the benefit of domain holders that failed to renew their domains on time, or whose domain was deleted for any other reason. More details on the Redemption Grace Period can be found at: http://www.icann.org/minutes/report-vgrs-rgp-consolidate-23feb03.htm http://www.icann.org/registrars/redemption-proposal-14feb02.htm http://www.icann.org/registrars/redemption-supplement-20feb02.

The redemption grace period is a 30-day window that occurs when a domain registrant fails to renew a domains registration. Instead of being deleted and returned to the pool of domain names available for registration, the name is held for a 30-day grace period during which the original domain registrant may retrieve the domain name (for an additional fee) by contacting the domain registrar. If the registrant fails to retrieve the domain during this 30-day window, it is deleted at the registry.

It is a period of 30 days, controlled by the Registry, during which the original registrant (who forgot to to renew the name) gets a last chance to renew. Please note this 30-day period happens after any registrar “on-hold” period. You can tell a name is in the grace period by the status field when you check the Registry Whois. For example: Domain Name: DOMAIN.COM Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD Updated Date: 11-mar-2004-2005 Creation Date: 13-feb-1999 Expiration Date: 13-feb-2004-2005 Just add 30 days to the “Updated Date” to find out the last date the name can be renewed. If it isn’t renewed by then, the name will be dropped back into the pool of available names after a further 5 to 6 days.

The Redemption Grace Period is a period during which a registrant can apply via InternetCrusade to retrieve a domain name after the domain name has been cancelled at the registry. A domain name cannot be registered by another registrant during the Redemption Grace Period. The period is normally for 30 days after the cancellation of a domain name. There is a fee (called the Redemption Fee) for this service to cover the costs charged by the registry.
