(Map, News) – Blazing summer heat is the rule up and down Western Oregon and the National Weather Service says Monday’s high temperature was a record for the date at Portland International Airport. Meteorologist Miles Higa says the airport hit 103 degrees, beating the 1958 record of 102. Records have been kept there since 1941. The Weather Service list of high temperatures as of 5 p.m. Monday showed Corvallis and Salem also hit 103, while Eugene was at 102 and Medford hit 105. Eastern Oregon temperatures were mainly in the high 80s and the 90s although The Dalles hit 103. The Yamhill County sheriff’s office says a 36-year-old Newberg-area man fell off a floatation device Monday in the Willamette River and drowned. The victim was identified as Oscar Cortes-Perez. Portland General Electric reports its customers hit a power usage peak of 3,790 megawatts at 5 p.m. Monday. That’s more than 14 percent above the 3,300 megawatt usage on a typical July day. Sources:
