The general recommendation is to have separate installations for development, test and productive environments each. Some customers even have a fourth installation as sandbox system or two test systems (one for integration and one for regression tests). Naturally, there can be reasons to have different system landscape set-ups as well. SAP NW PI provides integrated transport mechanisms that allow the transportation of new or changed objects between different landscapes.
