The usual starting Elavil dosage is 75 mg per day for this depression medicine, divided into two or more smaller doses. Your doctor may gradually increase the Elavil dosage to 150 mg per day. The total daily dose for this depression medicine is generally never higher than 200 mg. Alternatively, your doctor may also want to start this depression medicine at 50 mg to 100 mg at bedtime. He or she may increase this bedtime Elavil dosage by 25 or 50 mg up to a total of 150 mg per day. For long-term use, the usual Elavil dosage ranges from 40 to 100 mg taken once daily, usually at bedtime.
