WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED AGE FOR MY CHILD TO BEGIN PIANO, GUITAR, VIOLIN, ETC.?
This is a critical question that depends on the child’s ability to focus and on the physical strength and size they posses. Most music lessons are at least 30 minutes and require the student’s full attention for maximum benefit. It is best to delay music lessons until the child is able to focus on a task for at least this minimal amount of time. Of equal importance is the child’s ability to actually handle their chosen instrument. For example, it is extremely difficult for very young children to play the guitar, as the hand muscles are not sufficiently developed or strong enough to hold down the strings against the fret board. For these reasons, the recommended ages vary by instrument, as indicated on the chart shown below. Finally, it is best to introduce young musicians to music lessons when they are least likely to be frustrated by mental or physical limitations. It would be a shame to risk any disillusionment they might experience.
