What is the reason behind the different life times of different types of cells?
Cell lifespan relates to the different structure and functions that cells have in different tissues. In the lecture I explained that some cells live our entire life without replacement (neurons in the brain, cardiac muscle cells in the heart). In the brain the complex connections are formed during development and both it and teh heart need to function continually during our whole life. Other tissues (skin, lining of the gut, blood cells) are continually being made, ageing or being damages, dying and replaced within their tissue.
