What is the reason behind the current trade deficit with the United States?
T.K.: Examinig the trade figures, it’s a striking fact that volume imports of Turkey to US surpassed the volume of exports in 2005 with a 439 million dolar of deficit. One of the reasons of this stagnation in Turkey’s exports is the decrase in exports of iron and steel, and the other significant reason is the decline in exports of textile and clothing. While the exports of iron and steel was 1 billion dollars in 2004, it decreased to 667 million dollars in 2005 due to the decrease in iron-steel prices. On the other hand, decline in the exports of “articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted” was also ifluential in the emerge of deficit.
