The simplest way to look at the origin of Hinduism is simply to say Hinduism is the belief of the people who live in the Indus valley region. This is the easiest thing, and the truest way to look at it. There really is no formal name Hinduism farther back than several centuries. It is more a name that was given to the world view of those living in India by outsiders who needed to assign an -ism to this world view. As you know also, Hinduism is really difficult to formalize in a rigid system of belief, as there are so many different sects and variations. Perhaps the best way to summarize Hinduism is the collection of world views that share in common the belief in karma, reincarnation, caste, and the veneration and worship of various deities and spirits.
