Many engineers are dedicated to combining biological, physical and mathematical knowledge to solve problems in biology and medicine. They are often also referred to as bioengineers or biomedical engineers. Some of these engineers earn a degree in bioengineering. Others, however, chose a more traditional field, such as electrical engineering, and used course electives to gain a background in bioengineering. A new Bioengineering Concentration allows undergraduates in Electrical Engineering at George Mason University to gain familiarity with living systems, and with the challenges of taking measurements from such systems. Focusing on bioinstrumentation, the curriculum follows closely the “regular” Electrical Engineering requirements. The new concentration is suitable for students interested in electrical engineering who would like to apply their engineering know-how to biomedical problems. Some graduates are expected to work in industry developing electronic devices for medical applicatio
